AnswerSmart™ encourages all users and administrators to adhere to the following basic security "best practices":
- Turn off and remove unneeded or unknown programs, devices and services. Many operating systems come with auxiliary services that you probably do not need, such as an FTP server and/or Web server. These services are easy opportunities for attack. If they are removed, Hackers will have fewer avenues of attack and you will have exponentially less to worry about keeping in your software management.
- If a hacker or virus or spyware gains entry to your PC via one or more network services, you will need to disable, or block access to those services until a patch is applied.
- You absolutely must patches up-to-date, especially on any computers that host sensitive information that can be accessed through the firewall, such as HTTP, mai, FTP and DNS.
- Do you have a Password for each device you own? You need one. And the more complex the password, the better. Passwords make it difficult to break in. Having different passwords for each device and computer limits your exposure in the event of a break-in.
- Set yourself up with a simple Email Filter to block or remove email that contains file attachments that are commonly used with viruses and Spyware distribution, such as .exe, .vbs, .bat, .pif and .scr.
- Quarantine any infected PCs or servers quickly in order to prevent any further spread of the problem.
Train your loved ones as well as your employees to NEVER open attachments in email unless they are expecting them. Also, do not allow software that is downloaded from the Internet to “Run” or to “Install” unless it has been scanned for viruses. The fact is that simply visiting a compromised website can cause an infection so do not just click “Yes” or Run” to something you do not recognize and trust.
